A1 Hill

Located near the centre of Dien Bien Phu city, A1 is the site where the Vietnamese successfully defeated the French after 36 days and nights of fighting, signifying the end of French colonial rule in Vietnam. However the battle was not without great loss for the Vietnamese, claiming the lives of 2,516 Vietnamese soldiers. Significant remains of the battle site can still be found at A1, including the original intact bunker used by the French Army during the war and the crater left from the one tonne bomb detonated by the Vietnamese Army which directly led to the successful taking of the Hill.
